I know that IM injections are supposed to be given in the upper outer quadrants of the buttocks to avoid injury to the sciatic nerve. However, I have been injecting my the lower areas of my buttocks with sterile water, since the pain is greater and lasts longer especially when sitting, without any problems to my sciatic nerve. Has anyone else received shots in the the middle or lower areas of the buttocks without problems?

Michael, I also know that shots to be given in the upper outer quadrant, ie hips and not really butt cheeks. But some i have taken few shots right in the middle of my butt. They were given by some nurses (untrained/unqualified) in small clinics in rural part of india. Man I love them. Fortunately I had not faced any problem. Sometimes I fear that I'am in the risk of damaging my nerve. But I really enjoy taking shots in the middle of the bum from female nurses.

PEOPLE, PLEASE AVOID EXPERIMENTING WITH LOWER INNER BUTTOCK INJECTIONS UNLESS YOU WISH TO HIT A SCIATIC NERVE AND WANT TO BE PARALIZED FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! If you want to play, fine; but please educate yourself on the matter and by all means please PLAY SAFELY.

Before making recommendations regarding injections that may or may not interfere with the sciatic nerve, I suggest that those interested actually consult a human anatomy chart to discover exactly where the sciatic nerve is located. It would also be worthwhile to investigate the reported cases of damage to the sciatic nerve from intramuscular injections before deciding how significant an issue this is.

SQ and shallow IM injections can be given in the lower buttock. The sciatic nerve is pretty deep, and buried under the gluteus maximus so subcutaneous and shallow IM injections (with 1" needle) are relatively safe in this area if the "patient" has at least an average size butt. However I'd would be very careful with smaller people with smaller butts.
