I've gotten a few shots over the past few months. I'd like to share the stories. This is the most embarassing one.
Last fall I came down with strep twice within a few weeks. I felt really bad one day and had a schedule full of patients. I mentioned to one of my colleagues that I felt feverish and my throat was hurting again. He took me into one of our exam rooms (we share a nurse) and had me hop onto the table. My nurse came in to take my temp (102.1) and then doc T came in and examined me. When he looked into my throat he said, "Here we go again... but I think I'll screen you to make sure." A few minutes later the lab tech came in and swabbed my throat and left. I laid down on the table because I felt so rotten.
A few minutes later my nurse came back and said, "Dr T wants to give you bicillin." I said - "tell him Amoxicillin is fine." and she said - "you failed that." I rolled my eyes and continued sitting on the table. She said, "Lay down on your tummy Dr L, you know this has to go in your bottom." I recluctantly unzipped my pants, pulled my panties to the top of my legs and laid down, embarassed to bare my self to my nurse.
She gave me the whole 'big stick, big burn' spiel and just as she jabbed me, the door opened. I heard, "A consult question here. what are we going to do about this blah blah blah" and it was him! My colleague who had ordered this big antibiotic for my bottom came in the room and started asking me about a mutual patient as I lay on the table with my entire bottom exposed.
I said - "uh - 5 minutes, T?" and he kept right on going. I tried to act like it didn't bother me (and like it didn't hurt!) and when my nurse finished she turned to get the bandaid. After placing it on the site, she walked away. I rolled over and pulled up my panties and zipped my pants with T just rattling away about this lab value the entire time.
I just played it cool and tried not to bring attention to the fact that he had just seen me with a needle in my bottom. We haven't talked about it since, but walking back to our shared desk where he was sitting a few minutes later was mortifying.
He's in his fifties, a few years older than me and I guess it just seemed routine to him like I was just another patient, but nowmI blush every time I hear him order our nurse to give an IM injection.
