The shots are no longer given in the abdomen. They are given in the arm, buttock or hip. The story I related was in an ER and there were two other nurses and her Mother. You need to understand that when she realized that these needles, rather long, were going into her stomach, she became terribly frightened which is very understandable. At first she was restrained because once the shot was started and as painful as it was, we didn't want her thrashing about. That would have been dangerous. Her reaction was just that. And when there were 20 more of these to be given, every time we got her into the ER and saw her, it was a fight to get her on the table, lift her clothing up, lower her underwear slightly, to expose her abdomen and hold her tight as the injection was given. In fact i had rabie shots a few yrs ago, i think it was 5 in the arm over a month and a half period, at the first vist i got 4 RIG in the butt and 1 in the arm, it was no big deal, my butt was a bit sore for about 2 hrs after the shots and it went away quick, it felt sort of like lower back pain,, the only thing i was concerned about as the medication for the butt shots it looked like a lot of small air bubbles in the syringes, the stuff looked like 10w 30 motor oil. They tried to find the cat for like 2-3 days. A friend told her she needed to go to the doctor to get checked out. She told the doctor that she was trying to catch the cat to give it a home and when she went to pick it up it ran off. They put fooid and milk out, but it never returned. The doctor explained the risks of rabies and hearing that if she did get rabies it could kill her she opted for the shots. The dose is usually given half in the bite site and half in the butt. Then you get a shot in the arm over a period of time 3-4. No longer in the stomach. i decided to give her the injection in the arm first. She said that wasn't bad. Then I drew up 3cc in 2 syringes and she said was it that going? I said in your butt. It is a very thick med so I placed an 18g 1.5 inch needle on each. She lowered her jeans and panties. The doctor ordered 2.4 of LA bicillin and 8 mg of decadron and 8mg of Zofran. I came back in with four syringes as i decided to give her the penicillin in 2 doses. She laid down on the exam table. I flipped up her skirt and discovered she was not wearing any panties underneath. She had a round little butt that was very firm. I gave her 2 shots in each of her butt cheeks. She jumped each time I hit her cheek with the needle. She laid there holding her bottom in her hands. I massaged her firm cheeks after I applied bandaids to the four sites. I commented how firm her bottom was and she said she works out five days a week. She was limping when she walked out. I know her butt hurt like hell for the next day or two. The other day I did have this woman who weighed in excess of 300 pounds and I had to give her a steroid shot. I used an 18g 2 inch needle because her butt cheek was so big. I buried the needle all the way in and had to make sure it went deep enough to get it into her muscle. Not a pretty site with all the adipose tissue. Those kind of shots are not any fun.
