Hannah

My daughter got her first shot just a couple of weeks ago and she said that the medicine stings a lot when they inject into your body.

She received her HPV shot in her upper arm, but they also said that the shot can be given in the hip depending on the weight of the person being injected.

Just take a deep breathe and try to relax.

Both of my daughters have had the shots. The first two were injected in their behinds and the third one in the upper arm. I now have piece of mind and wish they had this vaccine years ago. Both of my daughters said the shot stung somewhat, and both their behinds was sore for a day or two after. Nothing serious though. As a Mother of 13 and 15 year old girls I feel their good health is very important. I take them to the Doctor for physicals yearly. We have a wonderful pediatrician. He actually takes time with my girls and I have never felt rushed. Whenever the girls are sick (which is rarely) He'll see them right away. When he examines both of them it's not just listen to the heartbeat and off you go. A physical means a physical. Everything is checked. They are told to remove everything except their bra and underpants. As you can imagine, they don't like this very much especially when Doctor has to check their genital area. But I have tried to make them realize how important it is to have a good physical.

My daughter has also had her shots for hpv. She recieved all of them in the rump. She said it hurt some. Like you Kathy, I have a good pediatrician for her. He examines everything on her too. She gets a little embarrassed but I think you would agree that a little embarrassment is a small price to pay for good healthcare.

My daughters are 16 and 17 and both recently got their shots. They had heard from their friends that it made their arms sore. I asked the nurse to give them their shots in their butt and she said that is fine. They could have killed me. One by one I watched as they dropped their jeans and had their butt bared in front of each other. My 16 year old went first. She piched her butt and jabbed her and she jumped and did a little dance afterward. My 17 year old tensed up her utt as she saw the needle coming and the nurse gave her butt a quick smack which turned her bottom bright red and then stuck her. They kidded each other on the way home as who put up the most fight.

No offense Mom of 2, but I find it hard to believe that the nurse would slap your daughter's behind in such a manner. Please this is a serious issue, I hope your just not posting just to post.

A smack on one buttock to distract the patient from the jab in the other is quite a common tactic - at least here in England.

I have been a nurse for 20 years and that is the way i do my injections for my pateitns. A quick slap on the butt makes the needle hurt less as it goes in . it distracts them.

Gardasil is the dumbest vaccine parents have ever been brainwashed into.

If sex is unprotected, which HAS to be the reason for taking the HPV shots, then I would be more concerned with a a few minor illnesses like AIDS, Hepatitis C, or any number of STDs going around. PREGNANCY EVEN?

Why the hysteria about the Papilloma Virus which, even if you have it, doesn't mean you get cervical cancer?

Also, how can you risk ANY chance of your daughters being one of the lucky ones to get seizures or even death from the vaccine? Is this the wave of the 21st century; to risk our children lives to possibly prevent a possible disease when worse ones are just as easy to get?

You buy lottery tickets with a 1 in 10 million chance of winning, when the odds are more in favor of your daughters having one of the bad affects from the HPV Vaccine. You think you're gonna win one and not the other? LOL

I can only assume that all you mothers out their have stock in Merck. If your daughters don't get cervical cancer and DO get Hepatitis C or AIDS will you feel relieved? I suppose you will.

Don't listen to my thoughts, read Mercks:

http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/105999

Merck denied these side affects for years....Hmmmmm Who is the joke on now ladies???

Perhaps tell your 12 year old kids when they're out having sex to just use a condome? Maybe it's NOT wise to mimic Sarah Palin and have your daughters out there boinking the world? But the ignorance of risking side affects from a vaccine where it is only 1 of the horrible things your daughters can get, is amazing.

No wonder this Country is in bad shape!!!!! You all suffer from Munchousers Syndrome!!!!!

Tim

PS. Have all of you made your daughters get the Pneumonia vaccine? MANY people die if they get Pneumonia. Better run out and make ALL your kids get that immediately. Pneumonia is contagious!!!!!!!

Tim - the pneumococcal vaccine is NOT a pneumonia shot. It is for the pneumococcal bug, specifically for meningitis - not Pneumonia.

Second, most 12 year olds will be 25 year olds some day. they may be in a monogamous relationship and decide to have a baby (ergo no place for condoms). What if their husbands are HPV + for the high risk strains? Should they risk having cervical cancer later in life (which they can die of.....) by having sex with their husbands, or should they be vaccinated against the bug that can cause it?

Certainly, to take the position of the extreme on any subject is dangerous and irresponsible.

Okay..here goes....

FIRSTLY, Pneumococcal is NOT a meningitis shot. it IS a shot to prevent pneumonia for up to 10 years.

http://www.fbhc.org/Patients/Modules/pneumonia.cfm

So all parents, if they want to stay consistent, should run right out and get this shot for ALL their kids. You can DIE from Pneumonia and it can be contagious WITHOUT sex.

SECONDLY, the example of a future husband is flawed. A future husband can also have Hepatitis C or HIV without even knowing it; So worrying about Cervical Cancer only, is still shortsighted.

Additionally, the vaccine doesnt cover all causes of Cervical Cancer. There are 12 strains of the Papilloma virus that can cause cervical cancer and Gardasil only covers 2. While these 2 may cause 70% of the Cervical Cancer cases, there is no guarantee one will get Cervical Cancer even if they have these 2 strains. And it's still only 2 out of the 12 strains that may give your kids cervical cancer. Huh?

If a seizure or any other severe side affect is possible, I would never risk my kids with this. This isnt the flu. You dont get this by sneezing. You have to have unprotected intercourse and probably quite often. (This isn't 1 time fits all here)

I suggest you never let your kids drive a car that isnt protected by layers of steel and air bags because the leading cause of death in the world is automobile accidents. There were over 31,000 DEATHS due to driving accidents in 2008. There were only 4000+ deaths from Cervical Cancer.

Anyone letting their kids drive a small to medium sized car has no business worrying about the Human Papilloma Virus if they wish to be consistent. Much greater chance of their kids dying in a car. And I didnt even mention serious accident statistics.....

LASTLY, I apologize if I spelled Munchousen Sydrome in an odd way but I got my information from this site:

http://www1.pro-activesouthlondon.org/page.asp?section=0001000100030030000100010001§ionTitle=What+is+child+abuse

And in the 3rd paragraph, they spell it the way I did.

I just think people need to seriously think before they takes risks. And by the mere fact that Merck has admitted the side affect of siezures after denying it for 5 years gives me serious pause about this vaccine. We all know Merck paid off almost every politician in an attempt to make this mandatory in every State. Why?

I dont recall Cervical Cancer being any silent killer among women as opposed the the many other deadly things they catch. Suddenly this is the new wave of urgency among 9-12 year olds for a future husband who most likely will give your daughters much worse things including a nervous breakdown!!!

Surprisingly, the one good aspect of this vaccine is, if your 12 year olds want this vaccine, you can bet your bottom dollar they're having sex...LOL

I rest my case...LOL

Tim

PS. I rent to a women who has AIDS. She got it at 20 through sex. Tell her about the Human Papilloma Virus and watch her laugh. Shes 45 now and only has HIV. But she hardly had to worry about the Papilloma Virus.

If a vaccine against AIDS or HepC existed, I'd have my whole family vaccinated. As they do not exist, using those diseases as a term of comparison is not very good.

Besides, being covered from just 70% of cervical cancer causes is much much better than being covered from 0%.

Cervical cancer kills most of those who get it. It kills much more than a flu, it kills way more than its vaccine. I'm not getting a vaccine for the flu, as I prefer my body learns how to fight a minor disease. But I did want to get the cervical cancer one. Unfortunately, my doc disagreed because of my food allergy, but if I had teenaged daughters I would not think twice.

After all, every medication has side effects that hurt a vast minority of people. You can't avoid taking antibiotics to cure an infection because you are afraid of their side effects.

And do not believe those who say it hurts a lot. Many friends of mine and daughters of friends of mine had it and they all said it stung a little. No one complained of being in pain the next day.

Besides, none of them received it in their hips, not even a twelve year old girl who's so teen you would think she's suffering from anorexia - which, believe me, it's not true, absolutely!

Vaccines are never administered into your hips. They are not effective that way!

No Anon,

I just like to think logically before I risk my kids lives, especially when profit is involved.

Critical thinking tends to avoid many unwanted situations in the present and future.

I agree with Tim.. The HPV shot is a joke and just another way for the Pharma companies to sell stuff.. To rush all your daughters to the Dr to hurry for some new vaccine is just stupid... It would serve all of you right if we found out, later, that it causes sterility after a time. Try using your brains more and read the sensationalist news less..

I have to agree with Tim. The new Doctor I have for my girls advises againts it. The old Doctor we had pushed it and then would refuse to properly examine the girls on physicals. She was rude on top of all that. She said that she didnt want to embarrass the kids. I found this unbelievable and found a new Doctor who practices with common sense.
