Yes the niners need to make some changes. But so do many other good teams in the NFL. Let's face it. There isn't much difference between the niners and ANY team in the NFL. When you create a ton of turnovers, lose starters to injury, and the opposing team's average starting position is their own 40 yard line, the BENGALS could have won the niners on Sunday.

However, I do believe the niners have to address a couple of glaring problems. They need to do something about their special teams (probably hire a new coach), and they desperately need a pass rush. When healthy, the niner's 2 starting corners can hold their own. But, they can't keep chasing people all over the field while the quarterback has all the time in the world. I love Bryant Young, but I think Stubblefield had a better year than he did this year. I can't believe Young made it to the pro bowl. I hope he just had a down year. What the niners need is to beef up their defensive line with some young studs. Their biggest need is another defensive end. Even though the niners didn't produce much of a pass rush this year, they were pretty solid against the run. Yet, due to age, they still need to address the interior area of the defensive line. Shaw looks good, but they need more.

I do not feel the niners should move up high in the draft. If you look at past drafts, latter first round draft picks seem to pay off as much as the earlier ones. Try taking a look and you'll find out.

As far as coaching is concerned, I have a lot of respect for Jimmy Johnson. We he says that there is no coach available that is as good as Mariucci, that reallys says something. Yes, he calls too many running plays at times, but his offenses are always ranked in the top 5. Maybe the fact that he's too nice of a guy hurts him. I think he needed to deal with special teams last year, and completely ignored it. DeHaven definetely has many years of experience, but he was fired from Buffalo because his special teams unit was horrible. Why not someone new.

As far as Donahue, I think he did a decent job with the draft. Rumph looks lost on the field, but so did Plummer and Webster their first year. There are only a few Charles Woodsons around who can enter the NFL and dominate his first year. Rasheed looked good when he had opportunities. At first, I did not agree with the rest of the picks, but Heitman turned out to be a steal, Shaw looked great in the few chances he had to play, that safety they got in the 4th round looked solid before going down to injury, and I think that rookie kicker is going to be alright. He was good in college and a pretty good bargain in the 4th round (where most kickers go).

Don't feel bad fellow niner fans. We have the best talent evaluater in history with Bill Walsh. Donahue is a Hall of Fame college coach and Marriuci one of the best coaches in the league. With another good draft(please don't draft another linebacker early this year), a rebuilt special teams squad, and the young group of players we've got I'm very optimistic about our niners.
