I think you make some really great observations, here, Katherine. The piece was definitely more of a statement than a work of art. I think there is a distinction. Of course it is just a definitional one, but I do believe that true art allows for more contemplation than the rather blatent statement made here. This is not to say that the piece is not important nor that the statement is not important. It just means that it is what I have heard called "newspaper art", meaning that the viewer has an immediate response and then goes on. There is no need to really look at the piece or reflect on its actual appearance or subtleties again. As for funding for such things, this is not a debate that truly interests me, really, I don't know about anyone else. For me, it is more about the question of, "Do people wish to pay to see the horrors of which they are all capable?" Most don't wish this. Yet, perhaps we all need to come to grips with it every now and again.
