Gosh, what a nice description, Mark. I really can't do much else but echo what you have said.

I do think that people have so many things to say that trying to define art is like trying to draw a line around what people have to say and how they are allowed to express themselves. To define art essentially would be to destroy it. Art has truly come to be an extension of ourselves through expression of self.

It did not used to be recognized as such. Commissions of the wealthy restricted the scope of artistic expression. But i don't want to overstate the inherent nature of commissioned work. The patronage of the wealthy, whether strictly hands off or quite involved, allowed the artist to have a voice in the first place and i am glad for it. That is where the NEA comes in.

As far as the NEA is concerned, well... i really don't feel that art should be for sale (pardon, Andy Warhol, i just had to say that) but rather it should be for free to anyone who wants to see it. Just as wisdom shouldn't cost a thing but the effort it takes a person to understand the wisdom being given. Neither wisdom nor art can really be taught, sold, bartered, etc. except in the material sense, which is NOT their true value despite anything a museum or school may say or practice or advocate to the contrary.

I especially like visual art because it has the potential to communicate the "is-ness" of life in a way that no word ever does, and it seems to me more closely personal than word formation simply because the work of the hand, the brushstroke, is unique to the person, the "you" or "i" that is undeniable expression like a fingerprint.
