the NEA is still up and running.

They are much more stringent in what they fund. They pay for artists who actually have specific works in mind, rather than a promising artist who may or may not have something but who wants $15,000 in public funds to consider it.

Some NEA work has been popular, some annoying, some a public health hazard like a giant (the size of a train car) piece of steel in front of a federal bldg. in New York City. It looks a big steel beam and the homeless use it as a wall to piss on all day and all night since it obstructs the public's view of their activities (unless you're in the office - you have a skybox view of the action).

Personally, I don't like public funding of art unless it is to commemorate a public "thing" like the WWII memorial or the JFK eternal flame or the Martin Luther King sculpture w/the water in Brimingham (I have no idea if it was pulbicly funded but it probably was, at least in part)

As to Piss Christ, I was annoyed by the way in which the artist chose to demonstrate his theme (the degredation of Christ at his crucifixion and/or his downgraded status in the public mind). If you have to explain your art, you're not to clear - like having to explain a joke.

My own upbringing would make it difficult for me to accept a $15,000 check for throwing a cheap plastic crucifix in a jar and peeing in it. Total work time : 1 minute. Total cost: About $2 if you buy the jar instead of recycling a mayo jar.
