Not hope in D:s works? Dont you remember last chapter of "Crime and Punishment"? I dont know it in English but that made impression to me.
I think there is terrible much hope in his works. He shows us that even any useless or bad person in earth (like Svidrigailov, Smerdjakov) is not completely bad no matter how he tries to. And that evil comes from suffering. We should feel sorry for them and not condemn. The fact rare people understand. His motto could be "every person is at the same time far worse and far better than he thinks he is". He shows how COMPLICATED it all is. Besides I love his sense of humour - I have laughed hysterically to his text:)
I see no point in Hesses: life is to born, to grow, to love, to suffer and to die. So what? We know it already, why to make novels about it? Terrible depressing. The fact that he had some contact to Jung makes no impression to me. D was Freuds favorite writer if we go there.
Well, I guess this just shows how different we are :)
