Freud based many of his insights upon erroneous assumptions. This is understandable given the time and type of problems that he was dealing with. Carl Jung took his best ideas and developed them according to his own personality and interests. In my opinion, Jung was much more spiritual and philosophical than Freud, in my opinion. He was deeply interested in anthropology and the plethora of ways that man expresses himself through symbols and art.
Freud was a bit naive in his interpretations of certain sexual subjects. Again, to be understood. The fundamental difference between Hesse and Dostoevsky is that Hesse approaches life as a whole, whereas Dostoevsky focuses much upon the duality within men, that duality that comes about when one focuses overmuch upon things that do not lead to unity and wholeness, but rather to fractured psyches and discontent.
Perkie still seems to get rather upset when faced with the notion that life has no meaning other than what we choose to give it, which is mostly what Hesse is saying. But Hesse also says, "How wonderful it is, this journey of life, which leads us nowhere, but everywhere!"
