In the political realm, one must look at 2 things:
Equality of opportunity
Equality of outcome
IMOHP, we should try to make equality of opportunity, as in making sure that there are no laws that bar due to racial or religious reasons , etc.
However, that is something alltogether different than equality of outcome. One should not legislate equality of outcome unless one wants to insure a very low level of achievement because we must accomodate for the lowest achieving among us - they will set the standard if we want equality of outcome.
Speaking of equality of outcome - this discussion has reminded me of the scene from "A Wrinkle in Time" where there is a whole neighborhood that is exactly the same - the kids all play at the same time, they all bounce the ball at the same time, etc. Creepy.
