It would be like Han Solo letting some private go and look for Luke in the snows of Hoth.

LOL! The situation is not even remotely similar! What would Han Solo do if Darth Vader's men had captured Princess Leia and went north, and if Luke decided to go on his own (with Artoo-detoo as "Sam") to the Emperor's base... who would he go to "rescue"?

When Luke let himself be captured in Return of the Jedi, did Han Solo try to find him? Princess Leia briefly tried to talk him out of it, but in the end, no one tried to follow him, even though they all knew where he was going... alone.

Let's talk about similar situations, okay?
