I read that poem and I don't envision the carpenter and boatman and mechanic as noble craftsmen and artisans but as the stinky, uncouth laborers that Whitman spent his days around.

The point I hoped to make was that Walt didn't see loud-mouthed, uncouth, obnoxious etc etc etc people . . . he saw the beauty in who they were -- who they really were -- and said "This is Humanity -- and it's wonderful".

It's great to be obnoxious, brash, opinionated and not care a damn what conventions are . . . and I think we've both heard those words come out of a certain person's mouth before . . . :)
