I had some similar experiences. People that stopped going to work because they totally believed their job wasn't going to be there after the first anyways and money wasn't going to be used anymore and the government was going to collapse.
The courier and press (local newspaper) actually perpetuated this idea.
I preached everyday that January first would come and go like any of day except that gas prices would rise.
(the paper actually said that electricity might be interrupted for months.
BTW, the man I was talking to that believed that everything was coming to an end was a very educated man. The man that wrote the article in the courier is a computer and gadget guru; very very intelligent; a techno-wiz
