Subject: Is life suffering?

I just finished the book by the Dalai Lama entitled: "An Open Heart, how to be compassionate in everyday existence."

The Lama is a wonderful man, but I am left with some serious questions. To start with, the Lama makes the assumption that all life is suffering. He then goes on to say that our goal in life should be the elimination of suffering within ourselves. He then says we should help others to eliminate their suffering as well.

My real question is this: Is his basic assumption right or wrong? Is life suffering?
