Of course the reason is that Tolkien never put the Silmarilion together -- he was working on it and died. His son took various writings together to put the book we now have, and well, I expect JRR Tolkien would have fixed many of the problems we now see.

So yes, it is a difficult work.But it is also a work to be seen as a collection of mythology, from various stages of Tolkien's thought. It does enrich the LOTR, but it is also filled with some excellent stories -- if one can get beyond how tough some of it can be.
