Gollum was not a hobbit, merely a creature similar to a hobbit.

According to Tolkien, Gollum was a Hobbit of the Stoor strain, born in the Stoor settlement near the Gladden Fields. The Stoors were the southernmost of three strains of Hobbits. Stoors were broader and heavier than other Hobbits and were the only Hobbits to grow beards. Some Stoors wore boots in muddy weather. They were almost the only Hobbits to know anything of boating, swimming and fishing.

The Stoors left the Vales of Anduin around TA 1300, going to Dunland or the Angle. The ones that went to the Angle fled to Dunland when Angmar became a threat around 1400. The settlement in the Gladden Fields survived until 2460. The Stoors of Dunland migrated to the Shire around 1630 and settled mostly in the Eastfarthing and the Southfarthing. At the time of the War of the Ring, Stoors were common in Buckland.

Gollum's real name was Trahald; the Anglicized Mannish equivalent was Sméagol.
