Dogs!!! What Should You Do???? What We Do!!!!

We love our pets!! But when it comes to finding them when they are lost you may not know what to do. First thing, call the Town Hall, or Animal Control Officer (798-2340) if you have lost or found a dog. If the dog has been picked up we may have it or some one may have found it. Call the radio stations for a free announcement. If you live near the border of another Town you should also call their Animal Control.

All dogs are required to have rabies at the age of four months and licenses. When licensed you will receive a tag with the license number, name of your Town and Town phone number. Licenses are renewed yearly. Only one tag is issued unless it is lost or you move to another Town.

If your dog is picked up by Animal Control, by State Law we are only required to hold the dog for seven days. After the seven days your dog could be surrendered to the Humane Society for adoption or euthanasia, the unclaimed dog could also be adopted directly from the Town of Bethel pound. We go to strenuous lengths to find owners when animals are found, but if they are not licensed it is impossible! Please make our jobs easier and for the welfare of your animal, license your dog!

Dog Licenses

Effective January 1, 2011 New York State Department of Ag and Markets is no longer sending out dog license renewals forms. Each Town in the State of New York is now required to handle their own dog licensing. Dog licenses are valid for one year unless a multi-year license is purchased. Current rabies certificate is required for all licenses. In order to purchase a multi-year license the rabies certificate must be valid for the license period. You may pay in person or by mail with cash or check made payable to the Town of Bethel .

This spring a dog enumeration/census will be conducted town-wide. Any dog found unlicensed will receive a one-time additional enumeration fee of $5.00 in addition to the license fee. Dog Licenses issued by other municipalities or states are valid for 30 days. If the dog is harbored in the Town of Bethel for longer than 30 days a Town of Bethel dog license will need to be purchased.

Dog License fees are as follows (effective January 1, 2011):

Spayed/Neutered:

One-Year License - $7.00; Two-Year License $14.00; Three-Year License $21.00

Un-spayed/Un-neutered:
One-Year License - $14.00; Two-Year License $28.00; Three-Year License $42.00

.
