Hello everyone
I am wondering if any breeders out there have had any pups develop Flexural deformity of the carpus ?
This is my story and I think we all have stacks to learn as breeders and for that matter as vets as well .
Indiana from my latest litter was a fit healthy young girl growing up in a litter of 8 pups .
She went to her new home at 8 weeks .Two days after the new owners rang to tell me that her foot may be broken as she would not put any weight on it and they were going to the vet for x rays ,two days later they phoned back to say that the x rays were clear ,but the vet had no idea what was wrong with her foot .
As the week progressed we had further contact still her foot would not touch the ground but she seemed in no pain and was still trying to play with the older dog ,with much difficulty .I suggested the she may have pano and to rest her and put her onto adult
Pal biscuit up until this point she was on Pal puppy from being weaned .
I asked that the vet call me and we could discuss the case .At this point I would like to add that I send the puppy owner all the details on pano to give to the vet ,vet never did ring me and that my puppy lived on a farm some 5 hrs drive away ,so you could just imagine what I felt .
Still phone calls and E mail went back and forth with me asking to have puppy back so I could see for myself .
10 days after another call from puppy parent saying that both legs were bad and that she was in all sorts of problems .Again I kept asking are her feet ok are her legs straight and yes all I got was here feet are perfect and her legs are fine .She went again to the same vet practice saw another vet who told my puppy parents that the puppy was crippled and that she would have to be put down !
Well I finally got her back last Friday night and I was horrified by the sight that I saw and for that matter I had two other long standing breeders look at her and they were stunned as well .
Both front legs bowed out and her feet knuckled over so badly that she was walking on her ankles.
So many phone calls later I was advised to have 4 calcium injections over a period of 10 days .
My vets thought I was a nutter when I called and asked for this treatment .
The puppy was so bad that she was taken and shown to the two top vets at the practice and I was told to take her to Sydney to an orthopedic vet who would operate .
I of course was beside myself with worry ,but always showed a bright sunny face to my puppy parents .
Anyway days passed and really not much improvement was noted
She went back on Monday and I saw Richard another vet at the hospital now he thought I was a total nutter but did the injection as I asked ,told me I was wasting my money and that he had heard about Indiana and new what she had and even printed out a copy of the page told me to take the puppy home and to not come back for anymore injections .
I read the report and saw the photo’s showing Indiana’s bowed leg and tipping feet
Followed instructions as in adult food limited exercise and I even decided to massage her legs to try and make the tight tendons feel better .What I have seen in this puppy is to be truthful amazing from how she was to what she is like know its really hard to believe .
I hope this has helped anyone out there as I searched the web I will say it again and again please seek a second and third opinion on anything to do with your animals it may end up saying you a lot of heartache in the long run .
Her prognosis is excellent as report have shown that she will not get this back again its just in the way she has grown .I will give you a basic outline
These puppys were are the start of a growth spurt the carpus was primarily affected and the tendons and musculas flexor carpus ulnaris were under tension it is conceivable that an unequal rate of bone growth relative to soft tissue could be responsible for this problem .
Her clinical signs were bowing of one leg them both and bending of the foot under pressure sometime so bad that she could not walk and stumbled about .
Report as follows
