A few things:

1. Albany and Stony already got the "thanks, but no thanks, you're a public school" rhetoric from the PL. We will no longer apply.

2. The PL could never go I-A, even with Tulane, Vanderbilt, et al, in football.

3. RPI is going nowhere for at least 4 years. The NCAA has place a moratorium on moving divisions.

They "grandfathered" in on this. They are, for legal purposes, members of both divisions. Accordingly, they could join the PL tomorrow. Colorado College, Union College and Johns Hopkins University are in the same position.

No, they are D-III with an exemption for hockey or lacrosse, as the case may be. RPI, SLU, Clarkson, Colorado College, Union and Hopkins are "grandfathered" for their D-I sports only, not for all sports. A school designates itself as D-I, D-II or D-III for all sports. It doesn't get to pick and choose its division by sport.

If RPI, for example, wanted to come into the PL for football they would have to go D-I in all sports.

From the NCAA By-Laws:

20.4.1.1 Classification of a Sport in Division I. A member institution may petition to be classified in
Division I in any one men’s sport, other than football or basketball, and in any one women’s sport, other
than basketball, and in any single sport in which the only NCAA championships opportunity is the National
Collegiate Championship. (Revised: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94)

Thank you Tunkmaster.

The schools who are grandfathered...cannot move up. FACT!

Well, they can move up but they'd have to move up in all sports, not just in football. There are also rules about how many sports must be fielded to be D-I. RPI, et al, may not have the student bases large enough to have the number of teams to qualify for D-I.

RPI has about 4500 undergrads which is larger than any other full member PL school except perhaps Lehigh who has about the same enrollment.

RPI would make an excellent PL school if they desired to move up and I believe they would get the support of the League. I hope they consider doing it.
