Subject: PL football and scholarships; at last!??

Fordham has made it official: if the PL does not go full scholie, they may bolt in 2010. I think as a FB-only member and about to feel the pain of a tighter AI, Fordham is playing the bad guy in pushing for this but in reality, this might be good for the whole league as the PL just wasn't competitive against major FCS programs of late (like the losses to Ivy teams). I think with FU sticking its neck out and making this stand, it will be easier for the other schools who secretly want to be more competitive with FCS teams and have a shot at a title. I can see Colgate, Lehigh and Lafayette sighing some relief that a stand is now taken and it wasn't one of them. Even HC, who once had a mighty 1-AA program, may see this as a good thing.

I know there are some who have always felt Fordham didn't belong (and may now say "Good riddance"), as well as some Fordham fans who wanted out of the PL, but I and many others like the PL but still wanted to be more competitive for OOC games. I, for one, am sick of losing to Villanova but also was not happy losing to schools like Albany and Dayton... good programs, but somehow they were hard loses to take. Fordham wants to schedule Army, Rutgers UConn etc. but that will never happen if we can't offer scholarships and raise the level of play as schools in the CCA can.

I hope others here feel the same and will push for scholarships at their respective schools. This might signal a new, exciting phase for PL football! I know the PL doesn't need Fordham, but it may just get more difficult for PL teams to recruit and play OOC games if they do not offer scholarships. Many fine schools offer football scholarships and suffer no ill-effects, in fact benefit from it. Why can't PL teams?

The ivy league for all intents and purposes gives FB scholarships. They have sufficient need aid to pay for all their students, if necessary. And, if they want an athlete for any sport, they can come up with all the need aid they want. It is a fallacy that they don't give scholarships. It's time for the PL to go with schollies.
