And a 16th seed is better than no seed at all.

The NEC's 3-3 record against a league "that is showing how bad it really is" does not exactly provide the credentials for an at-large bid.

...Nor does Albany's loss to Cornell

...Nor does CCSU's sorry attempt to impress playoff committee members by running up the score against 122nd ranked St. Peters.

Hey, there's always next year for the NEC.

It must be a real nightmare for you. All of the waiting and waiting and waiting and...

CCSU wasn't running up the score. They only threw seven passes the whole game, and used eight different running backs. Their last touchdown was a fumble recovery in the end zone.

You can't ask players to trip over the five-yard line.

Wait 'til next year? Albany opens at Colgate next year. Three in a row for 'gate vs. NEC?

CCSU had their first string RB in the game in the fourth quarter with the score 56-13. He scored on a 56 yard run. Then, CCSU kicked a field goal to make the score 66-13. Plus, with 42 seconds remaining in the first half, CCSU scored on a 45 yard pass play. What about taking a knee when your up 42-7 going into halftime? No, you can't ask the players to not play. But you can ask the coaches to have some class.

UAalum72,

Actually, I'm looking forward to next season's UA vs. 'Gate match-up and hope that it becomes a recurring event.

A good local rivalry is just what Colgate needs. (Note: Our annual Cornell game is a rivalry for Raider fans, but it's not generally perceived as such by Ivy-centric Big Red fans. So, that dulls the allure. Plus, Cornell football has been enduring a weak spell.)

Furthermore, I think that attendance would benefit from the match-up regardless of the Hamilton or Albany venue. 'Gate needs all of the turnstile assistance that it can get.

Finally, if Colgate does not institute athletic scholarships for football, and Albany continues to strengthen its program with scholarships, the match-up could eventually become a "stretch" game for Colgate akin to the Raiders' games with A10 contenders or their odd games with lesser D1 schools like Buffalo, Army, and Navy or with a perennial I-AA power like Furman. That's a good challenge to have, especially if Albany is scheduled early in the season and in advance of the PL games.

As for Danes vs. Raiders, it sounds like a Viking clash, and The Vikings movie is one of the all-time cinematic classics.

"I drink your safe return to ale. I wish that it were blood."

All of that said, I still stand by my conviction that the NEC has not earned a 2006 at-large bid. For all of Albany's "good" wins against the likes of Lehigh and Delaware, they lost to Fordham and Cornell. And, CCSU lost to Albany. And, Monmouth, who defeated Colgate, lost to Stony Brook who in turn lost to Georgetown. These losses do not sit well with a playoff committee that closely evaluates an at-large candidate's strength of schedule. Strength of schedule is an issue which the PL faces year in and year out, particularly because the A10 schools are regional neighbors of the PL, and because the Ivy League, a common source of PL opponents, generally is not regarded as a strong conference.

I also think that the PL has earned its automatic bid regardless of the down year that it is currently enduring. Lehigh, Colgate, Fordham, and Lafayette have all had justifiable levels of success in post-season play. That may change in the future, but for now, it's good enough for the playoff committee and good enough for me.
