Subject: Looks like NCAA will OK a 12-game D-1 football regular season

ACC is not in favor of it but every other Division 1 conference apparantly is. Story on ESPN.com.

I think that would be a huge mistake:
1. Most 1aa schools do not make money on football and adding one more game (not a playoff) just adds expense.
2. It means schools will have to carry more on their roster adding to title 9 issues. The reason being more games means more injuries and the need for deeper squads.
Every additional football player means one more volleyball or field hockey player etc.
3. These guys are supposed tobe students first, the season is very long and now you are encroaching on finals etc.

The bottom line I see no reason to go 12 games for most 1aa teams.

1. It's not REQUIRED that you play 12. If you're losing money, don't play, or use it to schedule a payday game.
2.The number of equivalencies isn't changing, so there's no Title IX issue. If one extra game causes a few injuries, the third string finally gets a chance to play.
3.The season will be ending at the same time so the playoffs finish before Xmas. The extra game will either be an early start (maybe even before classes start) or during a bye week. Football, with all games on Saturday, doesn't impact studies nearly as much as baskteball.

Anyway, it's not final yet. The plan was given tentative approval by the council during its meeting Monday, but still must be approved by the NCAA Board of Directors when it meets April 28.

As a fan, more football always is welcome. However, I would be interested in what the trainers say about the value of a week off for the health of the kids. Anyone out there with a medical perspective?

what's this about a possible merger of Division II and Division I-AA?

An idea being studied at the request of Division II is combining football programs from Divisions II and I-AA into two or more "alliances."

This would not affect either I-A or Division III football.

Most of D-II is now at 24 scholarship equivalencies or less (fully funded in D-II is 36). A handfull of fully funded D-II programs dominate the playoffs every year. The idea is that the heavies would move up to an "alliance" with the top I-AA programs. This alliance would have a scholarship limit of 63.

Meanwhile, in I-AA, there are programs ranging from the non-scholarship MAAC to the 63-scholarship A10. Under an alliance scheme, programs with fewer scholarships would join an alliance (or alliances) with similarly funded D-II programs.

It is significant that this alliance plan would not change current division membership.

Since 1993, the only way to change football classification has been to change division membership. For D-II schoools, this has resulted in tremendous additional expenses from adding sports and joining non-regional conferences.

Conference membership is needed for automatic bids to various NCAA championships. This can be taken to ridiculous extremes. For example, there are plans for an all-sports conference to include Utah Valley State, North Dakota State, Longwood (Virginia), and Indiana-Purdue at Ft. Wayne.

The alliance idea is an attempt to prevent logical football competition from being held hostage by the division system. Some have proposed three alliances (high, middle, and non-scholarship). However, two groups would seem to be more realistic.

Patriot League football teams have 50-55 equivalencies and would be in the upper alliance. No change there. The PL would be joined by the likes of North Dakota, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Grand Valley State (Michigan).

A report on the alliance idea is due next month. Check ncaa.org for details.

Alliances haven't yet reached the proposal stage. The prospects of any resulting legislative proposals are far from certain.
