Subject: Does that mean that PL teams will opt for 12 game seasons...I hope not
In reply to: Go...'gate 's message, "Looks like NCAA will OK a 12-game D-1 football regular season" on 13:57:55 04/12/05 Tue

I think that would be a huge mistake:
1. Most 1aa schools do not make money on football and adding one more game (not a playoff) just adds expense.
2. It means schools will have to carry more on their roster adding to title 9 issues. The reason being more games means more injuries and the need for deeper squads.
Every additional football player means one more volleyball or field hockey player etc.
3. These guys are supposed tobe students first, the season is very long and now you are encroaching on finals etc.

The bottom line I see no reason to go 12 games for most 1aa teams.

1. It's not REQUIRED that you play 12. If you're losing money, don't play, or use it to schedule a payday game.
2.The number of equivalencies isn't changing, so there's no Title IX issue. If one extra game causes a few injuries, the third string finally gets a chance to play.
3.The season will be ending at the same time so the playoffs finish before Xmas. The extra game will either be an early start (maybe even before classes start) or during a bye week. Football, with all games on Saturday, doesn't impact studies nearly as much as baskteball.

Anyway, it's not final yet. The plan was given tentative approval by the council during its meeting Monday, but still must be approved by the NCAA Board of Directors when it meets April 28.
