Hai Shawn,
Thanks for your extensive information on Christiansen, it’s great stuff!! I only can answer one of your two burning questions.
During the transatlantic flight to the America’s in the early 1930's, indeed Friedrich Christiansen was the captain/pilot. Before crossing the ocean the crew visited Holland, England, Portugal and Africa. After 1,5 year (!) the flyingboat returned to Berlin. In a Dutch magazine of that days, “Het Leven” of november/december 1930, a picture is publiced of Christiansen inside his Dornier Do-X. In an interbellum book, “The Captains Christiansen” a heroic story of this flight is mentioned. For a more realistic version you can visit these sites:

The story of the German Cross is new to me. I only know Christiansen was awarded the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. und 2. Klasse mit Schwertern on January 30th 1941, personally handend over to him by Hermann Göring
Greetings,
René
