U 76 left Helgoland on January 9, 1917 and order to lay mines before Murmansk. Bender arrived on 21.1. and wanted to enter the Kola-bay and to go into the harbour of Alexandrowsk on the following day in order to destroy the anchoring ships and then to lay his mines.
In the night he saw suddenly a darkened ship, dived but was hidden on the tower. The shock dammaged the hull so that water entered already at periscope depht.
He wanted nevertheless to return home but got dammages on the machines which he could not repair. When on the 27.1. he met a storm near to the island of SORO he risked to strand on the rocks. So he decided to find with the last battery current a protected place and to sink the boat. At 3 pm on the 27th they called the novegian fish trawler Alia by flaggs and transferred the crew. Only Bender, the LI Herrmann and a machinist stayed on board in order to sink her. All three sprang in the water and wanted to reach the trawler by swimming, only Herrmman died by the cold water.
The crew was trasferred to Hammerfest, liberated on the 28th and went back to Germany
