Hi Johan,

Two years ago you kindly sent me some photos regarding the Zeebrugge Raid. I am still researching this subject and last weekend I read a newspaper article in the British Newspaper Library archives which includes an interview from an officer from the German Marines. the content of the article suggests that on the 22nd April German Intelligence had received a confidential report which gave the impression that it was the British Governments policy to refrain from launching sea assaults. On the basis of this intelligence the security along the Belgian coast had been stood down. During the night of the 22nd April German Marines were being withdrawn from Zeebrugge garrison and were boarding trains bound for Ypres, to support the line German Army on the Western Front. When a shell fell on a train many German Marines were killed and wounded. The German Marine officer who was confident that the British would not attack from the sea thought the shell may have been fired from a german gun and his men had been killed by friendly fire. As he and the survivors were clearing the wreckage he got a message confiming that the British had landed on the Mole and he gathered as many arms and men as he could and headed for the Mole to confront them.

Are you able to verify this information.

Best wishes

Paul
