Hi:
Has anyone has tried the Current Designs Gulfstream? The specs on the cockpit seem a little small, but I've heard it described as a large person's boat.

The other kayak on my short list is the Wilderness Systems Tempest 180.

Any other suggestions or advice?

I have owned a Eddyline Nighthawk 17.5 and a Perception Carolina 16 and they were both plenty big.

The Gulfstream is larger than some, but not really what you'd call all that large. Really, it's a try it and see. I have yet to see a Temp 180 but understand the cockpit size to be in the range of the Nitehawk and the Carolina 16.

I got to try the Gulfstream the other day and you are right. The Gulfstream is not in the same size class as the Night Hawk or Carolina. However I did find another boat that is. The Current Designs Storm is a really big boat with plenty of cockpit space. The only downfall is that it has a rudder rather than a skeg. Otherwise the lines look sleek and the quality appears to be high. I have not paddled it yet.

Does anyone have any experience with this boat or its fiberglass cousin the Solstice GT?

Mike,

I tested a Gulfstream recently along side the CD Caribou (which I bought). It is NOT a "large" seat. After 10 minutes the sides of the seat were really pressing my hip bones tight. The boat itself is marvellous, but be CERTAIN to try it for fit before buying it. By the way, the Caribou is technically the same size cockpit, and the seat is snug, but not uncomfortable to my 42" waist as the Gulfstream was.

That's odd, I fit into a Gulfstream but not a Caribou, I thought that the Caribou had much more aggressive thigh braces and I couldn't get my legs under them.
If you can sit in the new P&H Capella, the large fiberglass one, they might call it the Capella 18. The cockpit is huge and at 6'6" my feet had plenty of room
I've been paddling a VCP Argonaut, it fits me fine since the factory seat was ripped out and replaced with a foam one. Don't be afraid to modify your boat!
