Hi!
Any recommendations for a sea kayak that has large enough cockpit to fit a short gal with a truly big rear? I haven't tried many kayaks but the ones I tried were a real adventure (& embarrassment!!) to get in if I managed at all.

Any insight on this topic are appreciated.
Thanks tons in advance!

Are you looking for a rec boat or a true sea kayak? For the latter, a good place to start is the Eddyline Nighthawk 17.5, or the Necky Looksha IV HV or Tesla NM. Beyond that, check the Boats for Big Guys (and gals) pages.

If you do want a sea kayak, you might want try a Current Designs Storm. I have encountered the same problem trying to find kayaks that were a good fit, and this is a pretty roomy boat. Please feel free to E mail if you would be more comfortable. Fern

Thanks for all your input. Yes, I'm looking for a true sea kayak (to answer Wes' Q above) I will check out some of the recommendations and hopefully some day, I'll find a boat that fits. I definitely have a lot of problems getting into the kayak because all of my weight is distributed around the hips and thighs. Guys are shaped differently so this seems to be less of a problem for them.

Thx,
Mel

Yeah, but there is an upside, when you get started learning to roll -- the weight distribution will be in your favor, then ;-)

Best of luck. We're getting into the time of year when there are a lot of demo days. Get hold of dealers within reach, and find out if they're planning any. Try on everything you can -- occasionally there are surprises. I once tried on a whitewater boat -- a Pyranah Micro 280 -- that I thought would be way too small, being that the cockpit was only 15 1/2 inches wide. Surprise -- it was one of the best fitting boats I'd ever been in. If I was looking for a creek boat, I think I'd give that a real hard look.

Not all of us guys have slim hips and long legs to go with a big upper body. I certainly don't fit that mold. I have relatively short legs, 28 inch inseam, a big butt and huge thighs and calfs. That is not to say I am not big on the upper side, because I am that too. I have a very hard time finding kayaks that I can sit in cofortably. My large thighs are usually the problem. I tried out a Current Design's Extreme XT last summer that when I wiggled myself into the cockpit, I was in severe pain due to the backwards deflection of my knees from the thigh braces pushing the legs down. I even had a hard time just getting my leg back out from under the thigh brace.
A couple of years ago Wes talked me into trying out a Telkwa that he uses. It felt very good as far as the stabilty went, but even better was the fact I could comfortably fit into the kayak. I talked to Wes about where he got this Kayak and found out that he bought it in Canada. He pointed me to an article he wrote about the trip which is still on this website. I looked it up on the Internet and just happened to find that they were having an end of the year sale on their used rental kayaks and gear. They had several of the Telkwa's for sale, both new and used, but most of them were Telkwa HV which were even bigger yet. To make a long story shorter I called and talked to them and then did my own run into Canada to buy one.
I am thoroughly satisfied with this kayak. There may be a time when I want a narrower kayak, but everyone tells me that it is quite fast with me in it. This even though it feels like I am riding a barge, meaning it is super stable. The only thing that I have noticed with this one is that in a cross wind it has so much deck exposed that I have to use the rudder. My previous boats have all been without a rudder and I was comfortable not using one, but this one I need it in a cross wind. Not that I cannot force it to track without one, but it takes an awful lot of effort.
Since you are specifically thinking about a Sea Kayak, I would highly recommend looking into one of these. The price for a used one is not that bad compared to a new plastic Sea Kayak, mine cost about $1,500 US. For the difference in price between this and a new Roto Mold it is worth it. You will have scratches, but there will be nothing structural wrong with it.
The best time to buy it is at the end of the season when they have their annual end of the year sale. Usually held on Canada's Thanksgiving Day weekend. So be aware that the traffic will be high on that weekend.
If you are in the area, I can let you try mine for as long as you want. Contact me if you would like.
