Annette,
Finding a kayak that fits is just like finding a new suit that fits! You don't just pick one out, regardless of your size, you HAVE to try it on! Most reputable shops will afford you that luxury, however, if they do, it's only proper to return the favor and do your purchasing there! I recently bought a yak from a chain sporting goods store (see my previous post about OT Loon 138's), but that's an exact boat to one that I already own, and bought used from a local shop (after some time in it's cockpit).
Length, cockpit size, hull style, material, and accessories will all be determined as a function of his build, what he wants to do with the yak, where he wants to GO with the boat, and how much (or little)he wants to spend...
I gave my normal dealer an opportunity to match (or come close) to the price and he couldn't, that's why I purchased from the chain sporting goods store.
On my first yak, I spent almost twice what I would have at the sporting goods store where I first looked, but I left with a boat that fit ME well, the right paddle, a well fitting PDF designed for paddling, a good roof rack (small investment to protect a much bigger investment), other necessary accessories, and the valuable advice and assistance of the experienced shopkeeper!
Good luck and safe paddling!
