You should be fine although you might have trouble getting a wetsuit that fits you... some outfitters require that you wear them on trips (depends on where you are going and the water temps). Definitly worth giving the outfitter a call and discussing with them as they might get you to try out a couple of different boats to find one that you like (otherwise they will often just assign you a boat and assume that it will work for you). All said and done, if they have a good selection of boats, you should be able to find something comfortable.
Happy paddling!

I just got back from a trip to Alaska where I'd researched as much as I could before renting boats, only to discover I did not fit in them. Sigh. I own a Current Designs Libra XT with the larger seats and I'm spoiled by it. We rented a Seascape 2, and the seat was so narrow my hips were pinched the minute I sat in it- a day trip would have been torture. (It was also in horrible condition, I was shocked a reputable outfitter would rent a boat like that- inspect a rental closely before signing anything) The plastic boats we tried from other outfitters were flimsy compared to glass, and several had serious problems (broken seats,etc.). We had trouble discussing boats on the phone because the outfitters didn't know their own fleets, and even in person they were not aware of the problems with their boats until we pointed them out. For the most part, the folks we dealt with were friendly and helpful, but it seems outfitters don't often have much experience with larger paddlers. Definately call them beforehand, be upfront about your concerns, and really inspect those boats.(and PFD's etc)
I'm also 5'6" and 250 lbs and have been in several uncomfortable rentals (all doubles)but at least the boats seemed seaworthy. I live in Puget Sound and have had good luck until this AK trip. Has anyone else had trouble with rentals before?
