I don't want to start a wishlist, but it would be nice if a roadtrip to Los Angeles worked it's way into one of them. Midget racing was very big here in the 40s and 50s and a number of Hollywood stars were regulars at Gilmore Stadium. Ever since I've moved here, tracking down "lost" race tracks has been something of a hobby of mine.

A few years ago I tried to revisit a pair of the stock car tracks I was a mechanic/driver on in the late 50s & early 60's . . . The first track had been turned into a trailer park/resort and the second had been over-run by a suburban neighborhood of a fast growing city. Sorta sad!

I did track down my first dirt-track car though - a 1928 Ford Model 'A' that I and my buddy, George had chopped down and turned into a dirt track 'speedster' for the 'old-timer' races. A car nut had 'preserved' it, but when we raced it, it was Model 'A' Ford Green -- when the nut had gotten done 'repairing' it, he'd painted it 'Candy Apple Red' - LOL

Here's a link to a '40s & '50s Midget track that was located about a mile from where I live now (although it was gone for many years before I moved out here). Apparently, it could be configured as a dirt road course as well as a 1/4 mile banked oval. It's a CostCo now.

I think from the amount of interest shown in these old cars it might be time for me to think about writing another story about jalopy racing. lol.

If you want to know what George and I came up with, try imagining a 1928 Model 'A' - stripped to the frame and running gear, then add a 1925 roadster body - no fenders, no bumpers, no roll cage. Tires and wheels were from an old pickup truck and if you touched wheels with another car while racing you were going for one very wild ride!
I think back on those days and have no trouble at all realizing why our mothers hated that thing! lol.
