My next younger brother was also born in 1947. His elementary school was one of the test sites in 1954. However in 1947 there was a lot of fear about polio. There were lots of rumors about how it was transmitted but no sure answers. Several kids from our town came down with polio -- a boy in my class got it his twin sister did not. A cousin caught it and was in an iron lung for some period. It was a blessing when the vaccine was finally available and since we were a test city, we were vaccinated relatively early

>I remember the polio outbreak and remember being
>filled with fear, even as a child. I was born in 1947,
>so was in the middle of this Polio outbreak. Several
>people, adults and children were affected in out
>community before the vaccine was released. Two adults
>that I know ended up in Iron Lungs. My parents were
>community minded, so we visited those families later,
>after the immunizations were done. I went to school,
>though college with kids in my community that were
>crippled. One girl had foot to hip braces on both
>legs, with a joint in the middle, and had hand
>crutches with metal extensions up her arms so she
>could walk around. I remember one summer of isolation
>and not allowed to go anywhere. Thank heavens for my
>cousins that lived across the road. We bonded as
>brothers and sisters during that time. As I
>understand it, Gerald R. Ford was our Congressman
>(Representative) at the time and served our district.
>Even though the vaccine was in short supply initially,
>he was instrumental in getting the "real" vaccine
>distributed to his (my) district, and kept his
>participation in doing this under wraps. Very few
>people knew what he did, and he made sure it stayed
>that way. I knew because he was friends at that time
>with my grandfather, and clued him in that the vaccine
>that was being given to his grandchildren was the
>"real deal" and to keep it quiet. Well, as usual, I
>got long winded so I will end this.
