I'm reading this because it's one of yours, but I'll be honest it's hitting close to home. I went to school with a survivor of Poliomyelitis who was lucky and only slightly crippled, but I knew a family who lost two of their three boys to the disease - only the youngest boy survived and that might have been because he was still nursing.

Personally I was in junior high before I got any form of immunization and then I only got two shots out of the three and the booster that we were supposed to get in the first form of immunization. I never got the third shot or the booster that everyone was supposed to receive, in fact I don't know if anyone in our school got those. I was in grade eleven or twelve before everyone in the school was given a second form of immunization and that was a sugar pill and that time the school board and the doctors made sure everyone under the age of eighteen got the treatment.

I'm with K Pelle on this one. I am reluctantly reading this story, but because it is yours, I will continue.

I remember the polio outbreak and remember being filled with fear, even as a child. I was born in 1947, so was in the middle of this Polio outbreak. Several people, adults and children were affected in out community before the vaccine was released. Two adults that I know ended up in Iron Lungs. My parents were community minded, so we visited those families later, after the immunizations were done. I went to school, though college with kids in my community that were crippled. One girl had foot to hip braces on both legs, with a joint in the middle, and had hand crutches with metal extensions up her arms so she could walk around. I remember one summer of isolation and not allowed to go anywhere. Thank heavens for my cousins that lived across the road. We bonded as brothers and sisters during that time. As I understand it, Gerald R. Ford was our Congressman (Representative) at the time and served our district. Even though the vaccine was in short supply initially, he was instrumental in getting the "real" vaccine distributed to his (my) district, and kept his participation in doing this under wraps. Very few people knew what he did, and he made sure it stayed that way. I knew because he was friends at that time with my grandfather, and clued him in that the vaccine that was being given to his grandchildren was the "real deal" and to keep it quiet. Well, as usual, I got long winded so I will end this.

My next younger brother was also born in 1947. His elementary school was one of the test sites in 1954. However in 1947 there was a lot of fear about polio. There were lots of rumors about how it was transmitted but no sure answers. Several kids from our town came down with polio -- a boy in my class got it his twin sister did not. A cousin caught it and was in an iron lung for some period. It was a blessing when the vaccine was finally available and since we were a test city, we were vaccinated relatively early
