Apparently Spearfish Lake and Bradford aren't the only place-names you are inventing, Wes! As a native Nevadan, I've been interested to read Magic Carpet, as much of it is set in my neck of the woods... and I have to giggle when I read about Shelby County and now Piute County, which are not real counties in Nevada, but sound like they could be!
Question: where is Shelby County vaguely supposed to be, anyway?
Thanks for another great story; I can't wait to see what happens!

Well, I'm not sure about Shelby county, but Wes left a whole passel of clues to find Clark County:

"a paved emergency runway - near there had been a bombing range target several miles away at Jackass Flats - the runway, and the Las Vegas/Reno highway that ran close by."

"The middle of nowhere is out that way . . ." she pointed back over her shoulder ". . . about twenty miles, Jackass Flats, where they used to set off atomic bomb tests."

"... we're about two hundred yards this side of the Clark County line. This is actually the closest legal house to Las Vegas, we're about twenty miles closer than the houses in Pahrump,"

So if you were trying to find the ‘Redlite Ranch Bordello' using those clues, it has to be somewhere along 95 - say between Camp Desert Rock and Indian Springs. So we know that they're almost on the edge of ‘Clark County,' and weren't they in Piute County?

That one just requires a map of Nevada. Clark County on my Rand McNally is the southern tip of the state, the one that has the town of Las Vegas in it

Clark County and Las Vegas are real places.

I haven't looked for the others.

Well, since I was going by memory and I was positive that I remembered Reno being northwest of Las Vegas, so I suppose I was looking in the wrong direction.

By the way, and this has little to do with the story, but I can say from personal observation that the area Wes is describing was an 'adventure' to drive in the 1960's, especially at the wheel of an eighteen wheeler.

It's interesting to bring up Las Vegas in googlemaps and search for some of the names mentioned in Chapter 11.

When I was reading this, my first impression was Lathrop Wells, at the Junction of US 95 and NV 373, home of the actual Cherry Patch. (http://www.cherrypatchwhorehouse.com/)

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=cherry+patch+lathrop+wells+nv&sll=34.211309,-118.499232&sspn=0.012386,0.013947&ie=UTF8&hq=cherry+patch&hnear=Lathrop+Wells,+NV&ll=36.643545,-116.39549&spn=0.006009,0.006974&t=h&z=17

This is in Nye County.

Bearing in mind that Piute County and the Redlite are fictional, yeah, they probably would have to be located around there somewhere.

About 50 miles or so from Beatty, I guess -- I'm not sure which direction, though! Roughly the same thing as forty miles from Forty Mile. I don't know a whole lot about Nevada geography, so I made stuff up

Quite a bit -- we're just getting going good!

My wife and I once drove up U.S. 95 from Las Vegas to Reno. Talk about desolate. Along the way my wife remarked that all the people living around 95 were probably going to heaven. When I asked how she knew that, she replied that they all lived in hell now so heaven was the only place they could go. And they call U.S. 50 which runs east to west through central Nevada from Utah to Lake Tahoe the "loneliest road".

I have made the drive from Vegas to Reno several times, and I don't really find it all that desolate. Yes, most of the towns along the 95 are pretty isolated, but I quite like many of them; they've got all these interesting buildings and all this history just laying there, and I think a lot of them would be wonderful places to live and visit if they had the money and inclination to fix them up and try to build up some sort of historical/cultural tourism. That may be just because I'm sort of a rural desert girl myself, though I've never lived anywhere quite as small as, say, Mina or Goldfield.
In any case, they are not the most isolated places I've been through; I once went through a "town" (a collection of settlements, really) in the southeast of California (probably not far from Beatty, actually!) where the only way in or out was this teeny tiny dirt road. I have no idea how these people go grocery shopping or survive on a day to day basis; in fact, Shirley's family ranch in the story quite reminds me of what I saw there, and I kind of picture it as being in the same geographic location.

50 miles from Beatty, eh? I suppose that makes some sort of sense, though it couldn't be west; Beatty pretty close to the California border. Probably the directions that would make most sense are north or east. :)

East doesn't work very well. Fifty miles east of Beatty puts you very deeply into the Nellis Ranges or the Nevada Test Site. One gets a little hot and heavy with small bombs (up to about a ton), the other takes you into the world of high radiation dosage and man made earth quakes; or did before they quit underground testing.

Those that think US 95 is desolate should try driving from the Hiko "Y" to Tonopah on Nevada 375. US 50 may be "The Loneliest Road" but that's because so few have even seen 375.

What kinda threw me for a few minutes were the references to the Antelope Valley- which is the valley where I live in Mojave, California. There a desperate lack of beautiful, brainy ladies of the night here, however. Mojave is a truckstop town with a really cool air- and space-port, and it's a great place to test rockets because there's bugger-all else to do here...
