Well, I'm originally a "Loper" (Michagan's lower peninsula) and to ears trained there, the pronunciation Stan and Dana gave their surname sounded like Klah-deck to me. They could be saying that back of the throat "sh" and I'm not hearing it. I know I don't hear and can't pronounce a lot of French and German phonemes. Some web research ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_Chladek )(and other sites) indicates the name orginally was Chládková (in the old country) as it turns out, and I'd guess they simplified it after moving to the US in 1968. I've talked to Stan and Dana several times at kayaking events. I'm still regrowing an ear after last talking to Stan maybe 10 years ago.

I think that with the second generation all bets are off on proper pronunciation. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Fandrich. I'd always heard it pronounced with the English Fan like in house fan rather than the German Fahn kind of sound...interestingly enough, the drich was pronounced with the German 'ch' in my grandmother's generation and with the 'k' in the next.
