I return to this scary, sobering day a couple more times in future stories -- in very different ways. It was very much a modern day Pearl Harbor.

Even after all of this time I still get choked up and nearly come to tears over the great loss of life, even if guys aren't supposed to cry.

I doubt very much that Matti is Matt. Remember, Matti is described as "Matti, his cellmate, was a pretty decent guy, too, even if he wasn't real bright".
In 2001 Matt Peckanen moved to the Geneva Reporter; it's hard to see how he would have accumulated 6 DUIs by September.
