It's all about duty and sacrifice versus personal freedom. It's also about growing up. Randy is merely the first of his group, Crystal, Myleigh and Nicole and him, to have to face that reality. None of them have had to face it like Randy. Hopefully, Randy and Nicole will be able to solve their problem in the current story. I suspect Crystal and Myleigh will deal with it sooner or later. Maybe Randy will finally realize what sacrifices his father and his contemporaries had to make in the 60s and 70s

I have to partially disagree with you, Boyd. Crystal is married, and actively helping her husband with his career, as well as pursuing the career for which she is best qualified. Myleigh is getting married, and is a PHD college professor as well as a nationally known harpist and vocalist. Nicole is married and is a school teacher. Pray tell, how much more adult are they required to be?

I have to comment that Wes' characters are realistic in that each of them 'go their own way' and aren't carbon copies with one basic set of characteristics. So in my case I sit back and watch the development as they change and interact with one another. One thing I have noticed is that his stories are like watching a group of children as they age and develop.
Sometimes though I feel Wes wears rose coloured glasses since almost all of his characters are a bit 'too' nice and get along a bit 'too' well with one another. Of course that does make for a nice bit of relief from real life.
Besides, if I do happen to feel a touch of ennui over the missing evil influence, I know how to use a keyboard to create a mildly villainous character for some hero to conquer.
PS, for models I often use the antics of backbencher politicians. LOL

Okay Wes, Carolyn comes close. ROFOL at myself for the timing of my comments.

G'day KP,

There's a hell of a difference about being adult and working and getting married to that of having to grow up and be mature. I found out, the hardest way possible, my wife (now ex) who was in her mid twenties when we met and employed, has never grown up and matured. now in her fifties she still thinks and behaves like a sixteen year old self indulgent snot. Age and adult activities do NOT equal grown up maturity. Crystal has been engaged in adult activities for a long time but is only now starting to grow up and act with maturity, as shown by her behaviour in Pulling Even.

Randy is just showing an emotional reacting to having to grow up and be mature early due to family circumstance, Nicole sees this and is being supportive. Randy is still nice enough to support her in having good times he can't, which shows he's still very nice, just vocalising his upsets instead of bottling them up - so he now sounds a but whiny, he's communicating with his wife and friends.

Regards,

Ernest

Actually, I neither agree nor disagree. My view is that many people react differently to any of life's little contretemps and it's larger problems. I've always been an observer and often watch from the sidelines so I see good and bad in many if not most people.
I'd be the first to say that responsibility is part of growing up. I'm another person whose dad died while I was very young and worked from an early age - heck at 16 I was running a fencing crew of several men on large farm/ranch for the summer. I guess I was the foreman, but to me it was just the job that needed to be done, so I did it.
Now having said that I wouldn't say that any of Randy's 'crew' are truly irresponsible, in fact Wes has allowed us to watch as they grew and became responsible adults. BUT, each handles their responsibilities differently, which is the way the world works. People are not clones!

I'm not sure I agree with you DE. I always thought Crystal was pretty mature and very responsible. It's just that she refused to settle down and get married. She just felt she had things to do before she took that step. Compare her with her sister Nanci in any book before Canyon Fires (only one is probably Dawnwalker?). Nanci was the irresponsible little brat who wouldn't grow up (like your ex?), thought only of herself, and not very far ahead at that. I think Crystal almost always thought things and consequences out pretty much beforehand.

Randy is even more grown up and responsible than Crystal, I agree, but I don't think Crystal is far behind him. Randy HAD to do it (start working the family business) right then, whereas Crystal didn't have to take that equivalent step at the same time. She does realize she has to do it (start doing office duties and equivalent at Canyon Tours) but hasn't yet actually started that I remember. She is a bit whiny about it. Randy is also being whiny, but both only to a very select few, not to everyone, which is what Nanci would be doing (pre-Canyon Fires). Nancy was whiny to everyone who would listen, which wasn't many because she didn't have many friends who would listen. Those sorts don't collect many friends.

Dmitri.
