I just posted the first chapter of The Last Place You Look. There are 27 chapters.

RTF files, mobis, epubs, and PDFs are available from the Spearfish Lake Tales Store. Sales on Lulu for hardcopies and PDFs have also been enabled; Lulu epubs should be available soon and I will make an announcement here when they are. In the meantime, you can still get epubs from the Spearfish Lake Tales Store.

Preorders have been shipped. Very often when I put up a new story there are html bugs that don't show up when I tested it locally. I'll stay up until around midnight EST to deal with any of those issues that you bring to my attention. I'll also be available until then if you want to order a book.

There's a story that goes along with The Last Place You Look. Years ago I'd established the main character as being located in Florida, so when I got around to writing this book, out of sheer laziness I placed his home in the subdivision where a relative lives. Then, when the book hit the editing stages, I discovered that Bob, one of my editors, lives about a mile from there. Bob was nice enough to send me pages of local color that added a lot to the vibrancy of the book. While there are still some totally fictional locations, this book is placed much better in the real world than normal. Thanks, Bob!

Have fun reading The Last Place You Look!

Wes, the end of the first chapter has a next chapter link. It goes to a 404 message so no harm, but not clean. Good start on the story.

In chapter 4 John says he only hires EMTs to work at his medical supply company. That makes sense since they sell equipment intended for use by EMTs. I wonder if that is standard procedure in the medical supply business. I remember a young woman I worked with 40 years ago who took a job as a pharmaceutical representative. I know she wasn't a pharmacist or even a pharmacy technician, if they even had them in those days. I've heard stories medical equipment salesmen who join surgeons in the operating rooms to demonstrate how new equipment works. Of course, this is hearsay but it makes me wonder.

I spent a long time in the hospital with my wife and I saw quite a few pharm salespeople. I saw one guy with the sales bags on rollers. I found out that he just sold x-ray supplies. Most of the sales people were pretty young women in high heels and short dresses. I doubt that many of them could even spell pharmaceutical. It must be demeaning to know that your best qualification for your job is your cleavage.

A job I worked about 25+ years ago now, the husband of one of my co-workers was trained as a salesman. I don't remember what company or product he represented before, but about the time I started working for this company (office products), my co-worker's husband changed jobs and became a salesman for a pharmaceutical company. He was the first trained "salesman" in that company. All the salespeople there already had chemistry or pharmaceutical backgrounds. In less than a year he was breaking sales records left and right. A salesman can sell anything they believe in (and lots they don't). I'm not a salesman.

I worked for a major "healthcare" company for many years. At the corporate headquarters campus was one building that held the sales training for the pharmaceutical division.

Fellow workers referred to the groups of trainees were simply referred to as "Biff & Buffy". You can draw your own conclusions, but many were blonde and very pretty.

The company called their sales force "detailers".

Sex does sell....even for drugs or drug products!
