I contribute to an amateur radio web site (www.repeater-builder.com) and have used a half-dozen different FTP programs over the 30 years that I've FTPing.

Ever since I found FileZilla I've stopped looking. It just plain works, and works outstandingly.

It's free from https://filezilla-project.org for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Do not get it from anywhere else. As recently published on the avast! blog, modified versions of FileZilla tainted with malware are being distributed on some third-party websites.

If you are running XP don't use anything after Version 3.9.0.1.

Filezilla is what I use and I am completely satisfied with it.

I'm pretty sure the FTP problem I'm having isn't related to the software at all. I'm on a satellite hookup at home, unfortunately with a bandwidth limit -- and we have three fairly busy computer users sharing it, so we blow through the limit well before the end of the month every month. When that happens, the speed is cut and the latency increases to the point where the server's software barfs.

When that happens, I have two choices: drive down to my work office and made the upload from there, which goes like a rocket sled on rails since it's on cable, or get my son-in-law to make the upload over his cell phone account. Since he's currently in England that won't work for now, so I've had to drive ten miles down to the office to make the previous four uploads. I rolled over to the new month on the bandwidth count yesterday, and today the upload went fine, which reinforces my feeling that it's the satellite, not the software. (The roads are icy today and I wanted to make sure the upload was made so that if I did have to drive in this stuff it would be in daylight.)

While I don't like the satellite setup and would drop it if something better were to come along, at the moment it's the best I can do locally. It's very expensive and a pain in the neck. For years I had a dialup account I could use for backup, but there's not a computer with a modem left in the house, so I don't have that fallback any more.

This problem comes and goes, at least when I'm on bandwidth restrictions, which I usually am toward the end of the month. I think I'm going to get in the habit of making the uploads way early toward the end of the month. I have given some thought to changing the upload times to late in the afternoon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so I can normally do it from the office. It may come to that in the long run. If I do make the change I will do it with plenty of notice to my readers.

So, we'll just have to wait and see. I think it's important that the upload is made regularly and on time. The official deadline for the upload is midnight, and I don't think I've ever gone later than that, although there have been a couple times it's been close. In eight years of doing this, I have never missed an upload, in spite of winter weather and one time having to do it from a hospital bed. I may be way early at times, especially if I know bad weather is coming, but I don't want to be late. It's part of the unspoken agreement I have with my faithful readers.

So, thanks to all for putting up with the problems.

Have you considered using LogMeIn or VNC to connect to your office computer? That would give you a connection to it and you would have it's desktop on a window on your home computer. The keyboard and mouse work just as you would expect. When your home bandwidth is capped the connection slows down, but it's still usable... the mouse movement and screen updates jjuusstt ssllooww ddoowwnn. However, once connected you could transfer the chapter file to the office computer. Once the file arrives you could remotely run FileZilla on the office machine and use it's fast connection for the FTP upload.

Alternatively, does voy.com offer scheduled file appearances?
Sites like FineStories and StoriesOnLine have that feature. You upload a set of chapters, even an entire books worth, and set a schedule for their appearance. At that point the chapters auto-post and you don't have to touch it until the chapter queue empties (i.e. the last chapter auto-posts).

Hmmmm . . . will run that one past my son-in-law when he gets back from England.

Thanks!
