The next book from Spearfish Lake Tales, Bird On the Field, is now available for preorder. It's Book Eight of the New Spearfish Lake series, and also Book Two of the "Bird" sub-series.

Here's the summary:

Things around Spearfish Lake High School are unsettled after the superintendent is shown the door and the high school principal leaves abruptly. Math teacher Brandy Wine is named principal, with orders to get school discipline and especially the football team under control. The football team's traditional but highly illegal pre-practice beer bust is in jeopardy since the guy who's supposed to get the beer is in jail. Jack and Vixen along with their friends are considering where to go to college and trying to stay above the hassles, since they have problems of their own, while Jack's younger brother Howie is starting to realize he's having trouble with his girlfriend. Things are going to be changing around Spearfish Lake when the dust settles!

The main story of Bird On the Field picks up right after the end of Bird In the Hand, although it takes off in a different direction. It sure is proving to be an interesting summer around Spearfish Lake!

There are a total of thirty-three chapters.

You can preorder Bird On the Field for as little as $19.99 through the Spearfish Lake Tales Store Bird On The Field page. Preorders will be sent sometime on the afternoon of February 15, Eastern Standard Time.

You know when I first read the blurb I was disappointed because I did not particularly enjoy "Bird in the Hand", it ok, but only ok.
I was thinking when I read at the end of BIH when Payne-in-the-ass resigned they should get Brandy to sort the high school out.
Now she is! Now I look forward to that! Hope I'm not disappointed!

I wasn't thinking that way, but when I read Wes's announcement, I thought "you got the wrong Evachevski!"

Put in Gil to kick butt and take names, and that school would never be the same.. although he probably is a bit on the old side for this.

I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to say that of all Gil's kids, Brandy is her father's daughter more than any of the others.

And yes, Gil is getting up there. He'd be about 80 now. Pretty spry for 80, but still . . .

Actually I thoroughly enjoyed "Bird in the Hand" - in fact in my books it's probably in second or third place of my favourites of the stories Wes has written.

So I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

It will be interesting to see who will be the superintendent...

I think it might be someone who is retired at the start of the story.

Brandy does have one thing in common with a good former principal - coaching a state champion team...

A word of advice for the interim Spearfish Lake superintendent:

Down where I live (my county, actually,) we had a long-term super retire. They promoted one of the board-members to interim. After about 3 years of unsuccessful searching, they finally deleted the word "interim" in the title, and after another five or six years, said super tried to retire. Being the polite, thoughtful man he was, he offered to stay on a bit until his replacement was hired.

Something like EIGHT YEARS LATER, he said "enough is enough," and retired. For real, this time.

"Interim" -- some of the best weasel-wording out there...

Granted, he was good for the system, and we were fortunate to have two really good supers in a row. He had a fairly set graduation speech; pretty short, full of useful information, like, "when you get to college, find out where the library is. When your parents come to visit, they're going to ask!" And he always closed with some really useful advice that some of the Spearfish Lake Football Punks probably could have used: "not much good happens after midnight. Go home. Get some sleep."

Is it only me or has the text size dropped in Bird on the Field?
Appears to be down to 12 from 14, not a problem to read just not quite in the style of your other stories.
As per usual you have me guessing what twists are comming.
I will be very supprised if Brandy does not win in the end, it is how she gets there that keeps me reading :)

Yes, you're right, the text size has dropped and I'm not sure why. It's obviously a coding bug, and I know I need to look at it, but I've been wrapped up in writing a new book and unwilling to take the time.

But, I have the book done now and will see if I can figure out what's up with the type size in the next few days.

I think I fixed the bug that was giving the small type size. I just hope I didn't unfix something else in the process.
