Subject: Bird in the Hand posting begins

I just posted the first chapter of Bird in the Hand. There are 45 chapters.

Sales on Lulu for hardcovers. epubs and PDFs have also been enabled. RTF files, mobis, epubs, and PDFs are also available from the Spearfish Lake Tales Store.

Preorders have been shipped. Very often when I put up a new story there are html bugs that don't show up when I tested it locally. Usually I stay up until around midnight to deal with any of those issues that you bring to my attention, but not this time -- I will be gone this evening, starting from a couple of hours from the time of this post, but I should be available all day tomorrow. I'll also be available until then if you want to order a book.

Since Bird in the Hand is a long book, this is a break for those who like to read the book in one sitting as soon as it comes out -- and it's especially a break for Americans who have Labor Day tomorrow, as they will have all day to recover from sitting up all night!

Have fun reading Bird in the Hand!

-- Wes

Just wondering... What type of bird is that in the picture for the cover? And thank you for the chapter count. I always wonder how many are in the book when you start the next one.

It's a saltmarsh sparrow. There is a link to the original picture and a little more information at the bottom of the "Intro" page.

I figured I was going to have a long, hard hunt for a cover photo. It turned out not, and am I glad!

You can answer this question by looking at the source of the frame containing the chapter numbers. Wes sets the frame up with the chapter numbers pre-loaded but commented out and then shifts the start of the comment each time he posts a new chapter.

How you view the source depends on the browser you are using. With a recent version of Firefox you can right click near but not on top of the word "Intro", then select This Frame -> View Frame Source.

Is "Jack" in this story "Jimmy" in Chapter 7 of Runner's Moon?
That would make "Stas" now "Skosh" from back then.

btw, there is an editing error in that particular chapter - immediately after the final "**********" separator. It was probably introduced in the 2007 edit. Just look for the word "Several".

I asked Wes about this and he said it wasn't the same dog. He had originally intended the dog to be the same one but had to change it to fit the timeline of other stories.

I thought the same thing that Jack & Jimmy and Stas & Skosh were similar characters. Considering the two times: Bird in Hand is set in 2010 and Runner's Moon is 1990. A twenty year old dog is very old, and Jack is in high school so he'd be 16 or 17 years old. Jimmy was probably 3 or 4 years old in 1990 with Skosh a puppy.

Still a co-incidence............

This sounds like a wiccan ritual to me. We know from PE24 that Lex is wiccan and we know from BB36 that Randy knows a wiccan priestess. So that's my guess.

Hey! I've noticed a typo in the 3rd chapter of Bird in the Hand. The main character in Kushiel's Dart is named Phèdre, not Phadre. Great reference, though!

This book is shaping up to be one of Wes' best! Lots of new characters with a whole bunch of sub plots. Love it so far!
