Subject: Speaking of servers (wiki)

Talking of servers, the wiki (spearfishlaketaleswiki.com) has been ailing for quite some time. I am considering moving its content to another server--there is a reasonably good free wiki host, Wikkii--but I wanted to
a) gauge interest in people willing to edit or at least read the wiki
b) make sure I am not stepping on anybody's toes

Input on this is welcome.

I would naturally like to see the wiki back running right. I understand it's mainly a server problem, and believe me, after the last few days I know what a headache they can be. I know there were several people working on projects that got stymied by inability to update, and I had a few things of my own to add.

I don't control the wiki -- it's a volunteer effort. But I'm willing to contribute to getting it working right if I can.

I read the wiki from time to time and I'd be happy to help out with the editing.

I use the Wiki on occasion to see "Who's on 1st". Not sure how much assistance I can be but, willing to do what I can.

The issue is finding a hosting service that will guarantee for Mediawiki to run correctly without them charging an arm and a leg.

I have been hosting the wiki on my domain via Network Solutions. When it is moved I will be moving my personal site also.

Right now to get a guarantee of compatible operation most hosting services are asking $34.95 a month and up. Currently I am paying about $12.00 a month.

We are running on a unix server farm and want to stay on Unix because Mediawiki does not run well on Windows.

I have spent several hours on the phone with the host's tech support people and they cannot deem to fix the problem.

If you have ideas please email me direct and I will be glad to discuss it with you.

Does it have to be Mediawiki?

I need beta-testers for the new server! It's spearfishlaketaleswiki.wikkii.net
At some point in the future, we may be able to repoint the DNS so the old wiki name will work.

Notes about the new server:
1. Character articles are now "First-Name Last-Name", but should be sorted in categories by last name, as before.
2. Existing users need to re-register, but if they use the same userid, they will "own" their user pages, their old contributions, etc.
If you find any problems, or have suggestions, please let me know on the talk page, or by email, or here in the forum.

Many thanks!

Glad it looks good!
I found and fixed a few more artifacts of my changing the character names. I also cleaned up old links (e.g. Rocinante) and spiffed up a few things I wanted to for a while, but couldn't because of edit problems (or maybe the old version) on the old wiki.

Thank you Wes, Kirby and Dang Fool for looking (and updating) the new version. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will work for a while.

Sam, you deserve thanks and recogniton for the potload of work you've already put into the new-look Wiki. I realize a lot of it was made up of things that had built up during the period that the old Wiki couldn't be updated, but still, when I look at the "recent changes" listing you've done an awful lot in a short time. Many thanks!
