I think in '52 the Starlights still had the bullet front.

IMHO, nothing before or since can beat the styling found on the Avanti I. It was their "swan song" but, what an incredible way to go out.

I was working in Calgary when the Avanti came out and the dealer had a 'slightly' used one for sale. A friend of mine (His father was another car dealer) talked the Studebaker dealer into letting us take it for a test drive at the local car club.
Both Ken and I had cars that had been 'souped up,' for 'street legal' drags at the local drag-race track on the weekends. In the quarter-mile we could each beat that Avanti, but it just blew the doors off both our cars in a standing mile. Neither one of us had the guts to hold the pedal to the metal on a longer run. I recall packing it in when the needle read 120 and there was still throttle left to go, but we only had 2 1/2 miles of closed road and I wanted to be sure I could stop.
