It's only about 3 hours to Indy from lower Michigan. Leave at 4am and get to the track as they open the gates. Go back on Friday night. A lot of travel, but I've gone farther for a race. I used to travel from mid Mass to upper NH to watch the winged midgets. Those suckers can almost fly on a 1/4 mile track.
