I'm sure you're right on that and other people have drawn it to my attention. The funny thing about it is that when I first wrote that scene -- a long time ago, close to twenty years -- I had a paramedic go over it to check how correct I was. I don't remember him saying anything about standing clear. What can you say but "oh, well . . ."
