In reply to: K Pelle aka dotB 's message, "Photo Post - Dec. 5" on 20:47:26 12/05/13 Thu

It's often surprising, and always interesting when something like this (K Pelle's message) comes along. It's one of those things that caught my eye about the Internet (although no one used the term when I got started) years ago (anyone else remember Usenet newsgroups?) If nothing else, it brought all sorts of people, from all sorts of backgrounds, together. Age, time, space, knowledge... I went back and I still don't see half those things K Pelle was talking about!

It turns out to be an old McCormick, but I don't know what model. Here's one that is similar.

I think this drill is set up to plant wheat or similar seed in the large hopper and small seed such as alfalfa or mustard from the small hopper. Where I am from [Indiana] we plant oats or wheat as a nurse crop for alfalfa and would use both hoppers to plant the field. I never used a drill this old but the ones in my generation were little different with the 2 hoppers.

You're right, that's exactly what they were designed for, but my older brother happened to notice that the small hopper was just perfect size to use as a spreader for the 'brand-new' chemical fertilizer that had just come on the market. It worked too, but come to think about it, we only used it for that a time or two - you see my Dad died in 1952 and we had just bought a 44 Massey-Harris tractor, built a new house and bought a quarter section of land, so we had to cut back on the 'frills' for a few years. We simply didn't have the extra money to buy fertilizer and by the time we did, we had a much newer seed drill which we got at a neighbour's auction sale.

It amazes me at the depth & variety of readers who show up on the forum. I cannot tell you a thing about farm equipment but I enjoy reading this discussion.

Thanks for providing an avenue for these meetings.
