Very nice photograph. This is how I picture the Bradford Speedway that Mel Austin built.

Glad you like it, especially since another photo taken at the same time may well be the cover photo for the next Bullring book, currently planned for January.

By the way, it's actually Spartan Speedway in Mason, MI.

Looks like they have Figure 8 races there too.

Gonna have School Bus figure 8s tonight, but I'm not going to be able to go. Those get wild!

Check the May 7th Photo post thread further down the Forum page where Wes and I exchanged messages about a previous picture of the Spartan Speedway and figure-8 racing. Wes included a YouTube link to school bus races at that track. From the number of videos on YouTube for figure-8 racing that particular form of insanity is still very popular.

Glad to hear about the next Bullring book. Also, glad to know that racing in small towns is still alive. It's something good from the 50s and 60s that hasn't been replaced by the electronic society. By the way, is Carl Austin, a boatman mentioned in "Icewater and the Alien", related to Mel Austin or the contractor who built Jason MacRae's knife store?

Not that I'm aware of.

Sometimes I grab names a little too quickly without thinking about it as much as I should.

The problem is, you've got too many people who pay too much attention. I remember rereading Homesteaders and in chapter one, talking about the car, thinking, "Has Mel Austin always been mentioned here?"

You're right. I've read all his stories multiple times. When I go back and read his early stories, I read things I don't remember reading before. And I don't think my memory is all that bad. I've gotten worse the last several years since I buy his books when they first come out. I've read "Winchester Harbor" four or five times completely plus parts of it multiple times since it first came out. Since I like Mark and Jackie, there no telling how many times I'll read the new book starting Sunday. If you're retired like I am and like to read, it's easy to go overboard if you like a particular author.
