Something you might want to think about and look into.
Last April I did a 5 day raft trip on the Clarance River on NZ's South Island, with Clarance River tours. Very interesting and great fun, not as spectacular as the GC, I'm sure, but more than you'll find in Oz. The river flows north east between two mountain ranges, which had snow on the peaks, in April!!! On the last day the river did a 180 turn, cut thru one range and entered the sea. A great trip.
And I did the whole thing for $A1800, less than the air fare to Flagstaff from here.
