I've seen the device (antibiotics inhibiting birth control pills) a number of times in fiction, and decided to do a little research. This http://shs.osu.edu/blog/the-truth-about-antibiotics-and-birth-control1 seems to debunk it rather well.

Of course, that doesn't address the other legend - that being even a few hours late taking the daily pill can result in ovulation.

Most likely being sick makes people forget to take their pills.

What's amazing to me is that none of the women on the trip asked Michelle "How far along are you. dear?". Women seem to have a 6th sense about that.
