Although the border is relatively 'open' and people drive across daily - any form of handgun is liable to be confiscated at the border and the person carrying it will more than likely be charged. In order to carry in Canada you need to have SPECIAL dispensation to do so - very few people can get that sort of permission. Right at the moment there are several court cases in the works over people crossing the border with weapons of various kinds. It's often a case that the person in question has a pistol stashed in their car and is so accustomed to it being there that they forget to remove it, but our courts don't seem to care. Heck, for me to take my Luger from the safety deposit box* and carry it to the rifle range, I need to get a permit. In other words carrying any form of handgun anywhere in Canada is a pain in the keester for anyone. * Yeah, you read that right, SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX - my lawyer advised me to do that, because there have been cases where handguns are seized for no apparent reason. As I understand it, I'm only allowed to keep it because it was inherited from my father, so it has sentimental value.
